EVIDENCE CUSTODIAN (Part-Time) MONROE TOWNSHIP POLICE DEPARTMENT

General Description:

The property and evidence function is an integral and essential part of every law enforcement agency. Police officers come into custody of lost or stolen property, contraband and any manner of evidence on a daily basis. The Evidence Custodian is responsible for establishing a system for the secure and efficient classification, inventory, retrieval and disposition of these items. This is a part-time position within the Monroe Township Police Department and will not work more than twenty-four (24) hours in a week.

Duties Include, But Are Not Limited To:

· Operates and maintains a system of documentation to track property from its receipt to its eventual disposal;

· Operates and maintains a secure and orderly storage facility to meet the needs of the Monroe Township Police Department;

· Investigates and conducts any and all firearms background checks;

· Meets with the public and answers any and all firearm related questions;

· Conducts periodic and special audits of the contents of the property storage facility to insure continuing accuracy;

· Provides for the proper and timely disposition of property and evidence;

· Processes and transports evidence for testing and for court;

· Testifies at hearings and at trials in matters relating to property and evidence operations;

· Prepares a budget and acquires price quotes for supplies and equipment;

· Investigates firearms purchaser applications and permits;

· Fingerprints individuals as required;

· Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

· Ability to understand, follow, remember, carry out oral/written instructions, orders, policies/procedures;

· Ability to investigate and conduct any and all firearms background checks thoroughly;

· Ability to converse and or meet with the public and answer any/all firearms related questions;

· Knowledge and proficient ability to utilize computers and required software with ability to adapt to updates and enhancements;

· Ability to navigate various Local, County and State computer sites and programs;

· Must demonstrate the ability to communicate both verbally and in writing, clearly, and concisely in the English language;

· Prepare written reports, using appropriate grammar, symbols, and mathematical computations;

· Ability to be entrusted with and maintain confidential and / or sensitive information;

· Ability to properly handle large sums of money, hazardous materials, firearms, biohazards and unusual items;

· Ability to maintain complex records and files;

· Good organizational, written & verbal communication skills with the ability to prioritize, multi-task, be self-motivated, detail-oriented and able to function efficiently within a fast paced and sometimes confusing and stressful environment;

· Ability to deal effectively and patiently with the general public, other Township employees including management and municipal officials in a courteous, pleasant, tactful, professional and efficient manner;

· Ability to work in a team-oriented environment with the ability to develop and maintain cooperative working relationships, accept direction and function cooperatively as one member of a unit.

· Ability to read, write, speak and understand English commensurate with the duties of this position;

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENT:

· Ability to sit or stand for extended periods of time;

· Ability to lift, carry, move objects up to fifty (50) pounds;

· Ability to ascend or descend ladders;

· Ability to reach above the shoulders to place and/or retrieve objects;

· Ability to move quickly and easily, occasionally including the ability to crawl, stoop or bend;

· Ability to identify and distinguish colors;

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND LICENSE / CERTIFICATION AND OTHER REQUIRMENTS:

· Possess a valid New Jersey Driver’s License;

· High School Diploma, Vocational High School, or equivalent;

· Prior experience as a certified full-time police officer in the State of New Jersey;

· Possess and maintain a valid permit to carry a handgun from the State of New Jersey; and possess own handgun.

Candidates must be 18 years of age or older and reside in New Jersey unless otherwise exempted by law. Candidates are required to pass a pre-employment physical and drug screen, psychological evaluation, motor vehicle record check, and background / reference check. Applicants may be required to pass a written test, screening by an oral board and approval by the Chief of Police prior to being eligible for appointment.

Wages:

$35.18 per hour / pursuant to applicable Collective Bargaining Agreement.
